Food Rescue

Over 5 million pounds of food goes to waste in Texarkana each year.  Harvest Texarkana partners with over 40 area restaurants, cafeterias, and retailers to rescue this unserved but not unwanted food.  Each day we collect food from donors in a specially designed refrigerated van and immediately deliver it to area soup kitchens, shelters, and after-school programs for immediate use. 

In recent years, this program has grown to collect not only prepared foods like cakes, sandwiches, and casseroles to also include retail salvage.  Many retailers choose not to sell torn boxes, slightly dented cans, or items with torn labels.  But the food is perfect.  Harvest Texarkana also collects this 'scratch and dent' food for distribution through our food bank. 

 In 2009, nearly 750,000 lbs of nutritious and delicious food was saved from area dumpsters.
